“It has been nice to sort of get away from golf a little bit and reflect and sort of let it sink in, but I’m looking forward to getting back at it this week,” McIlroy said.

“People from all walks of life and different sports have reached out to me to say, ‘Well done.’ So it’s very nice to have so many people watching you and encouraging you and supporting you.”

“Got one from Fergie. “It’s great to get to this position and obviously I’d love to stay here for as long as possible. I just need to concentrate on playing good golf, trying to win tournaments. If I can do that, then the position I’m at will hopefully take care of itself.”

The reigning US Open champion has handled success at a young age but takes it in stride.

Pongsathorn Suwannakhorn, 31, of Nonthaburi, was rushed to a nearby hospital after he fell to the ground floor of the store at about 1pm.

He sustained a broken neck, arms and legs and was pronounced dead at hospital, said Pol Lt Wanchai Phanphat, the investigator in charge of the case.

The man was carrying a Ramkhamhaeng University student ID card.

Preliminary results of the police investigation showed Pongsathorn was shopping in the department store and went upstairs by the escalators. Eyewitnesses saw him lean out before falling off the escalator to the ground floor, said Pol Lt Wanchai.

The incident shocked many shoppers who witnessed it.

Pol Lt Wanchai said the incident could have been either an accident or a suicide because Pongsathorn’s younger sister told police her brother had been on medication to help him cope with stress.

A formal autopsy was being conducted to establish the cause of his death.

The department store’s public relations officer said the incident was captured on a security camera, which should help police determine the cause of death.
